SticX was given the task to design a timber structure for the new sixth form school, Bellerive, Liverpool. The structure is four storey’s tall, which holds space for a reception, kitchen, offices, dining, a music room and 21 classroom spaces. The sixth form college is approximately 40m x 24m. It is formed by two overlapping wings which are offset on plan and which also overlap to form a valley roof along the middle third of the building. To overcome the issue of supporting the long roof valley beam, we designed a ridge bean which was supported by cranked beams within the walls. The top three storeys of the school were built with a timber frame superstructure, whilst the first storey was built with a steel frame structure. The timber was able to support the roof and the masonry cladding.
